Magical record keeping is what turns scattered practice into learning. A record does not have to be long. It needs to capture what you did, why you did it, what context mattered, and what happened afterward.
Core fields
For most workings, record the date, intention, method, materials, timing, mood, practical action, and review date. For tarot or runes, add the question, spread, cards or runes, first impression, interpretation, and next step. For herbs and crystals, add safety notes and personal observations.
Review dates
Choose the review date before closing the working. A small spell might need three days. A moon intention might need one lunar phase. A habit or seasonal goal might need a month or a sabbat cycle. Without a review date, results become easy to exaggerate or forget.
Track misses too
Record when nothing obvious happened, when the spell was too vague, when you skipped the practical action, or when a correspondence did not feel right. Honest misses are useful. They help you refine your timing, wording, substitutions, and methods.
Make records searchable
Use tags, symbols, index pages, or digital folders. A single entry might be tagged protection, rosemary, waning moon, doorway, and boundary. Searchable records make it easier to repeat what worked and avoid rebuilding every spell from memory.

Worked Example: Spell Record
Title the page with the intention, not the method: “Focus for exam week” instead of “yellow candle spell.” Record the date, moon phase, materials, exact words, practical study plan, and review date. After the review date, write what happened, what was coincidence, what action helped, and what you would change.

Use tags such as protection, money, calm, communication, release, full moon, rosemary, candle, tarot, dream, and result. Tags let one page appear in several parts of your index. That makes the grimoire easier to use as it grows.
Weekly Record Review
Choose one day each week to skim your notes. Mark anything that needs follow-up, any spell that needs a review, and any repeated symbol, card, herb, or mood. This review turns individual pages into a usable system. Without review, even detailed notes can become a pile of forgotten entries.
