Correspondence Substitutions Guide

Substitution is part of practical witchcraft. You will not always have the exact herb, crystal, candle color, moon phase, or tool listed in a spell. A good substitution keeps the purpose clear while respecting safety, budget, access, and personal meaning.

Substitute by role

Ask what the original item is doing in the spell. Is it protecting, sweetening, grounding, heating, clarifying, attracting, releasing, or marking a boundary? Once you know the role, choose another material, color, symbol, or written word that can do the same job.

For protection, rosemary might become bay, black thread, a key, a written ward, or a cleaned threshold. For calm, lavender might become blue paper, breathwork, chamomile tea if safe, a soft cloth, or a quiet playlist. The role matters more than matching a list perfectly.

When to use paper substitutions

Paper is powerful and safe for many situations. Write the herb name, crystal name, color, symbol, or planetary timing on a petition. This is useful when you have allergies, pets, pregnancy concerns, limited money, shared housing, or uncertainty about safety.

Do not substitute safety away

Never replace a food-safe herb with an unsafe herb in something you plan to drink or eat. Never replace a safe candle setup with a risky one because the symbolism feels stronger. If the safe version feels less dramatic, choose safe anyway. Magic that endangers your body or home is not better magic.

Substitution Examples

If a spell calls for rose quartz but you do not have it, use pink paper, a heart symbol, a kind note to yourself, or another object that represents compassion. If a spell calls for a green candle, use white with a green ribbon or write the color name on the petition. If a ritual calls for full moon timing and you missed it, use the next evening and record the adjustment.

Personal Meaning

Personal correspondences are valid when they are consistent and recorded. If mint reminds you of focus because of your own experience, write that down. Your grimoire can hold both traditional meanings and lived meanings without forcing them to be identical.

Substitution Review

After a spell, record what you substituted and why. Note whether the replacement kept the intention clear, felt safer, saved money, or made the work easier to complete. If the substitute worked, add it to your personal correspondence list. If it felt confusing, choose a simpler symbol next time.
